Introduction to Export Controls

Thu, May 14, 2020, 1:00 pm
Maeder Hall Room 103

Export control regulations are designed to protect US national security, prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, protect national resources, and support international agreements and human rights. In short, export control regulations apply to the shipment of items/commodities overseas and the transfer of information and technology to foreign nationals - activities conducted each day at Princeton.

This Introduction to Export Controls class will provide staff with an overview of US government export control regulations and how they apply to activities at Princeton University. Princeton University policy ensures that research projects conducted at the university are exempt from export control regulations. However, export control regulations may still apply to activities at the university, including:

• Disclosure of a research sponsor’s proprietary information to foreign persons

• Shipment of equipment out of the US

• Sharing technical data on export-controlled equipment with a foreign person in the US

• Working with entities/individuals that have been debarred by the US government

• Activities involving entities/individuals in sanctioned countries.
