Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Regulations

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is a financial intelligence and enforcement agency of the U.S. Treasury Department. OFAC administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions in support of U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives. OFAC regulations can be difficult to understand and penalties for violating them can be severe. This class will explain what you need to be aware of and how to avoid issues. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations class is open to all members of the University community (faculty, researchers, staff, and students) and will provide an overview of the OFAC regulations and how they apply to activities at Princeton University. Topics include: - Travelling to sanctioned countries - Working with entities/individuals that have been debarred by the US government - Activities involving entities/individuals in sanctioned countries - Monetary transactions involving sanctioned countries - OFAC export license application process Export control regulations are designed to protect US national security, prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, protect national resources, and support international agreements and human rights. Export control regulations apply to the shipment of items/commodities overseas and the transfer of information and technology to foreign persons - activities conducted each day at Princeton. Princeton University policy ensures that research projects conducted at the university are exempt from export control regulations. However, export control regulations may still apply to activities at the university. The Introduction to Export Controls – Basics class will provide a beginner’s overview of US government export control regulations. It will focus on the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and how they apply to activities at Princeton University. This class is open to all members of the University community (faculty, researchers, staff, and students). Topics include: - Shipping materials out of the US - Sharing technical data on export controlled equipment with a foreign person in the US - Working with entities/individuals that have been debarred by the US government - Fundamental Research Exclusion
